The long hot summer before the Gran Premio Nuvolari 2016
The season of the most prestigious events worldwide for classic cars has started and is already well underway. This last 7th May, the Targa Florio started, which this year 2016 has celebrated its first 100 editions.
A cursa, as the Targa Florio is called by Sicilians, got underway for the first time on 6th May 1906 making it the oldest circuit race in the world. Created by the visionary genius of Vincenzio Florio, a true entrepreneur and man of culture, the Targa Florio even early on became an icon of Italy and of Siciliy in the world. A race that let many drivers create their own mythos; among them Tazio Nuvolari, who took victory in the 1931 and 1932 races. These incredible endeavours of Tazio even inspired the works of Vate Gabriele d’Annunzio, writer of a memorable telegram of congratulations along with a famous tribute: the lucky turtle with the inscription “To the fastest man in the world, the slowest animal”.
Two weeks later it was instead time for the Mille Miglia race, won by the five time Gran Premio Nuvolari winning team, Vesco-Guerini. A victory, that of the pair from Brescia, which harked back to the incredible 1930 edition when the two great champions of Italian motorsport, Archille Varzi and Tazio Nuvolari, battled along the entire course until the clamorous denouement of Nivola’s overtaking of his rival  “with switched off headlights”. This was an even matchup that signalled the start of an era and reinforced the myth of Nuvolari, champion of the impossible.
