The event celebrating the myth of Tazio Nuvolari kicks off from Mantua with the record attendance of 312 crews from around the world and more than 100 pre-war cars

16.09.2022

Mantua, 16th September 2022 –The 32nd edition of the Gran Premio Nuvolari, Italy's most technical international regularity event for historic cars, kicked off today. Until Sept. 18, it will bring together in Mantua, the city from which the Grand Prix starts and ends, the elite of classic enthusiasts along with cars of timeless appeal to pay tribute to the myth of the "Great Nivola," a legendary sportsman who more than any other has marked the history of 20th-century motoring.

In the year in which the 130th anniversary of the birth of the “Flying Mantuan” is celebrated, an important anniversary that will be celebrated thanks to the organizational efforts of Mantova Corse, the event registers a record number of presences: in fact, 312 crews coming from the five continents and selected by a special commission will take part in the competition, testifying to the strong enthusiasm that surrounds what is considered one of the most beautiful races in the world.

After the classic pre-race scrutineering, the “Premio Mantova 2022 - Nuvolari 130 Anni” took place, a 7.5 km night prologue that enlivened the streets of Mantua's historical centre yesterday evening,

Thursday 15 September. The winners were the Argentinean father and son duo Zerbini - Zerbini (no. 158), who scored only 7 hundredths of a second of penalty in 5 timed trials, an extraordinary result.

First among the Italian crews were Fontanella - Covelli (no. 4), second classified Belometti - Vavassori (no. 36) and third classified Loperfido - Moretti (no. 85). Next in the number two position among the foreign crews was Acevedo - Acevedo (no. 101) and in third place crew number 54 made up of Erejemovich - Giuggolini.

Today at 10.45 a.m. on Friday 16 September the start will take place in the picturesque Piazza Sordello.

In keeping with the established 30-year tradition of the Gran Premio Nuvolari, number 1 will be symbolically reserved for the greatest driver of all time, the legendary Tazio Nuvolari. Number 2 will be assigned to a car entered by the National Automobile Museum and driven by the De Angelis-Del Gaudio crew: the superb Cisitalia 202 SMM Nuvolari, the first and only car ever named after a racing driver.

Numerous countries representing all continents (Italy, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United States, Lithuania, Great Britain, Russia, Austria, Belgium, Uruguay, Argentina, Japan, Colombia, Poland, Lebanon, Monte Carlo, San Marino) and 48 automakers competing, from the Italian Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lancia, Ferrari and Fiat, to the British Jaguar, Aston Martin, Bentley and Triumph, from the German Mercedes, BMW and Porsche to the French pursangs signed Ettore Bugatti. This year more than 100 pre-war cars (made from 1932 to 1939) will take part in the event.

Also significant is the presence of numerous cars from the 1950s; 150 participants will run the Grand Prix with cars of the Ferrari, Jaguar and Porsche brands.

The Grand Prix represents a unique opportunity for gentlemen drivers and the general public to be able to appreciate up close the icons of world motoring, who again this year will gather as usual in Piazza Sordello, in the heart of the Gonzaga city, for what promises to be a special edition full of novelties.

The 32nd edition sees confirmed partners Red Bull, Tag Heuer and Finservice, along with the return of Banca Generali, thanks to which the "Nuvolari" will reaffirm some of its fundamental characteristics: sports competition, historical celebration and touring tourism.

Sensitive to issues concerning environmental protection, the "Gran Premio Nuvolari Green" initiative, an important greening action carried out under the patronage of the Municipality of Mantua, will be proposed again this year.  The environmental impact caused by the circulation of the historic cars participating in the event will be offset by the planting, in selected areas, of a sufficient number of tall trees to balance the total CO2 emission.
