Registration to the Gran Premio Nuvolari 2016 officially opened
03/01/2016
MANTUA, 1st March 2016 – Today is the official opening of the registration to the 26th edition of the Gran Premio Nuvolari, an international rally event reserved to historic cars that meet the F.I.A., F.I.V.A. and A.C.I. Sport standards, scheduled between 15th and 18th September 2016. The event is organised by the car racing team Scuderia Mantova Corse in collaboration with the Automobile Club of Mantua and the museum Museo Tazio Nuvolari: it will offer participants the opportunity to experience the unique emotion of the event entirely dedicated to the man also known as the "Flying Mantuan": high precision chronometer competitions, very high level tourism, breathtaking roads and landscapes, and the warm embrace of thousands of enthusiasts waiting for the cars in the most amazing and history-filled squares of Italy.
The 2016 route
The 2016 edition will start on 16th September at 11 o'clock, at the end of the sports and technical tests, from Piazza Sordello having as background the unique Palazzo Ducale. The crews will drive the initial kilometres of this 1050 km-long grand prix and will eventually conclude the morning with a chronometer competition at the Cremona circuit in San Martino del Lago. In the afternoon, after the lunch break, the cars will reach the motor-racing track “Riccardo Paletti” in Varano de’ Melegari (Parma), after which they will drive along the hairpin turns leading to the Passo della Cisa and then down to the Tyrrhenian coast, passing by the towns of Carrara and Massa, until they will finally arrive in Forte dei Marmi, where they will have the pleasure to be the guests of the first evening event at the prestigious Versilia beach club.
Day 2: Saturday 17th, the most challenging day of the Gran Premio Nuvolari. After leaving Forte dei Marmi, the cars will reach the cities of Lucca, where they will drive along the historical city walls, and Pisa, driving through Piazza dei Miracoli, to be finally welcomed by the warm embrace of motor race enthusiasts in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, one of the most astonishing squares in Italy. This overwhelming trip will continue with very strict chronometer competitions until the Piazza Grande in Arezzo, Città di Castello and Urbino, eventually reaching the final destination in Rimini, where the cars are expected to arrive at 18.30. The participants will be hosted in the fascinating rooms of the Grand Hotel of Rimini, where they will experience the early twentieth century atmosphere and will take part in the official gala dinner in honour of Tazio Nuvolari.
Sunday 18th. In the morning the crews will set out for Mantua. On their way back they will have to face the last chronometer tests, which will be crucial to determine the winner of the Gran Premio: from Rimini to Cesena until Meldola, and then on the so-called “small Nurburgring” circuit, the International Motor Racing Track "Enzo e Dino Ferrari" in Imola. After a visit at the Circuito Ariosteo in Ferrara, and driving through Borgofranco and Ostiglia, both in the province of Mantua, the cars will arrive in Piazza Sordello after 1050 kilometres, welcomed by a waving crowd.
Terms for registration
Applications for registration shall be filed exclusively on the following website: www.gpnuvolari.it. Registration shall be opened until 31st July 2016. Registration to the Gran Premio Nuvolari is only allowed to cars manufactured between 1919 and 1969 having a F.I.V.A. passport, a F.I.A. Heritage fiche, an A.S.I. type-approval, or an ACI Sport /C.S.A.I. fiche, or cars belonging to a Car Brand Register.
A day in the History
The race was initially established in 1954 to pay homage to Tazio Nuvolari. It was designed to include the roads connecting Cremona to Mantua, and eventually Brescia, i.e. the last part of the Mille Miglia race which was on until 1957. At present, the Gran Premio Nuvolari stands out as one of the most appreciated events by car collectors, pilots and historic car enthusiasts, which confirms its role as the major rally event in the world, second to the Mille Miglia only. Looking back at history, this year the event will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the amazing triumph of Eugenio Castellotti back in 1956. This very young and talented Italian pilot won the Mille Miglia, despite the heavy rain which characterised the entire race that year, and also conquered the Gran Premio Nuvolari driving a Ferrari 290 MM Scaglietti.
